Swiss GriP Non-Slip Durability

Slip Resistant Floor – The Commons at Ormond Collective

Application Type:

  • Commercial

The Ormond Collective is a restaurant, café and wine bar. The heated outdoor Conservatory Café, offers a cosy space to enjoy a warm brew and a bite to eat, in the gorgeous leafy setting of beautiful gardens. Swiss GriP non-slip was applied to the checker plate pattern tiles to create a slip-resistant floor.

The Ormond Collective was inspired by the great terraces and outdoor dining spaces of Europe and America – florals, gingham, ticking and stripes, oversized cushions, park benches and French café chairs. Now the The Conservatory, The Kitchen Garden, The Rose Garden and The Beer Garden, ensured there is space for everyone to feel comfortable while enjoying a drink, lunch or dinner.

During the renovation of the Conservatory Café, a beautiful black and white checker plated floor was installed. However, soon after opening, the ceramic tiles became a serious slipping hazard for staff and guests, especially in wet conditions.

After a trial period with various solutions, Swiss GriP Non-Slip was selected over anti-slip treatments. The treatments did not improve the slip resistance significantly while also staining the black tiles. Anti-slip treatments can cause staining because the actual product used is hydrochloric acid. This aggressive and harmful substance breaks the seal of the tile and dissolves the silica, creating a “rougher surface” but also causing staining.

Swiss GriP Non-Slip on the other hand creates a durable, slip-resistant finish on top of the surface. So besides providing excellent slip-resistance, it also seals and protects the tiles and grouts against the elements.

Vince, the Operations Manager at Ormond Collective was sceptical at first about Swiss GriP. “I had my doubts as I have seen other coatings perform poorly due to peeling,” he explains. “However, Swiss GriP exceeded all my expectations on durability. The Swiss GriP coating does not peel, even when tables and chairs are frequently moved over the surface.”

Moreover, Vince has seen the benefits of a slip-resistant surface. “My staff is extremely happy with Swiss GriP. They can walk much faster as there is no risk of slipping anymore, even in wet conditions. So besides safety, it has also contributed to the efficiency and productivity of my team.

After the Swiss GriP installation, a NATA-accredited slip-test was carried out. The floor scored a P4 slip-rating in accordance to AS 4663, easily meeting the Australian Safety Standard.
