Slip-Free Glass Panels – Penrith Council

Application Type:

  • Commercial

In architectural design, glass floor panels stand out as a remarkable feature. However, their slip-resistance often poses a challenge, particularly when these panels are intended for outdoor installation. This was also the case for an art project at the new Penrith City Park. Addressing this hurdle, Swiss GriP emerged as the key solution to create slip-free glass panels that seamlessly showcase the art underneath with minimal disruption.

At approximately 7,000sqm, City Park will be a significant open space in a prime location in Penrith, NSW. As part of the redevelopment project, art installations by Leesa Knights will be integrate into the walkways. To safeguard the artwork, glass floor panels will cover the installations. This innovative approach allows pedestrians to engage with the art by walking and standing directly above it. Yet, given the outdoor setting, the glass needed to meet a P4 slip-rating standard.

Initially, the council explored etched or sandblasted glass panels as a means to achieve the required slip-rating. However, it became evident that these methods significantly compromised the transparency of the glass, obstructing the view of the art installations. Moreover, these alternatives proved excessively costly, necessitating a separate production line for the glass manufacturer.

Slip-Resistant Glass Panels
The optimal solution emerged through Swiss GriP Non-Slip, which delivered a coating to create slip-free glass. Our tailored dot template design maintained the transparency of the glass, allowing pedestrians an unobstructed view of the artworks. Importantly, our solution successfully attained a P4 slip-rating in an independent test. Notably, it proved to be considerably more cost-effective compared to the other options explored by Penrith Council.
